Tuesday Tuneage: How to Beat The “Ides of March”

PC: Huffington Post

Call me superstitious, but the month of March has always been one full of more than one day of ides. Sure, the actual “Ides of March” infamously lie on the 15th, but things just kinda seem out of sorts a little more around this time of the year – who knows? Maybe it’s the pollen.

Need some inspiration? Some reassurance? Some new (or oldie-but-goodie) jams for your midweek blues? This week’s playlist is dedicated to rising above, figuring out, and ultimately beating those ides, one happy tune at a time.

1. “Be Okay” – Oh Honey

This tune is unapologetically happy, listing things that can encourage you that you will follow what the title suggests. You can practically feel the sunshine in this song as the duo assures you that here and now, you’ll do just fine.

2. “Mexico” – KYKO

“I just wanna make sure I see some life…” The need to break out and break away can be overwhelming at times, from any aspect of life. While this song describes the sand-and-sun of Mexico, its upbeat nature will transport you to wherever you want to go – whether that’s across the world or down the street.

3. “Here Comes The Sun” – The Beatles

Speaking of sunshine, how about the worldwide anthem of happiness? Call it cliche, but this is one of the (if not *the*) happiest song on Earth – I know for me it always makes me smile whenever I hear it. So go ahead – smile a little.

4. “Dress & Tie” – Charlene Kaye (feat. Darren Criss)

Singer-songwriter Kaye teamed up with multi-talented Criss for this dulcet duet, one with harmonies so simple and sweet that you can’t help but sing along. Listen to this one outside, shades on and feet up – it’s almost an instant toe-tapper that will make you feel just that much more at ease.

5. “Chasing The Sun” – Sara Bareilles

Bareilles has the ability to make beautiful, moving music that is also uplifting and inspiring. This track off of 2013’s “The Blessed Unrest” has all of the above and then some – if you need some encouragement, let Ms. B sing you some heartfelt praise.

6. “Tiny Dancer” – Elton John

This is another one of those songs that makes me smile every time I listen to it, singing along at the top of my lungs literally anywhere it is playing (seriously, it could be playing at a grocery store and I would probably think it’s a karaoke bar). You know you know the words – at least the chorus. Indulge yourself a little bit with this one. Break out that falsetto. Live a little.

7. “Masterpiece” – Jessie J

One of my go-to “get up and go” songs, this is one of the British songstress’s most uplifting numbers. You may not be exactly where you want to be, you may not be sure where you’re headed, but the fact that you’re still working on it means that your masterpiece is still being worked on – and that’s an achievement in and of itself.
