Tuesday Tuneage: Grammys Grab Bag 2016

Welcome back, listeners. This week’s Tuesday Tuneage departs a bit from the usual playlist format and instead focuses on the recently announced GRAMMY Award nominations. From pop to rock to hip-hop, county and beyond, this year’s nominees were (as always) full of snubs, surprises, and some seriously good tuneage. Here’s a grab bag of some of the year’s recognized artists – and who I may think will take home the trophy.

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

“Ship To Wreck” – Florence + The Machine

“Sugar” – Maroon 5

“Uptown Funk” – Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars

“Bad Blood” – Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar

“See You Again” – Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth

Who Will Win: “Uptown Funk” better give it to ya…that song was EVERYWHERE on pop radio, but in an even more infectious way than most radio hits. We’re all still singing this one, right? Right.

Best Rock Performance

“Don’t Wanna Fight” – Alabama Shakes

“What Kind of Man” – Florence + The Machine

“Something from Nothing” – Foo Fighters

“Ex’s and Oh’s” – Elle King

“Moaning Lisa Smile” – Wolf Alice

Who Will Win: Shakes seems like an industry favorite, but Elle King’s smash is just now taking flight on airwaves – is it enough to garner her the gold?

Best R&B Performance

“If I Don’t Have You” – Tamar Braxton

“Rise Up” -Andra Day

“Breathing Underwater” Hiatus Kaiyote

“Planes(z)” Jeremih feat. J. Cole

“Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)” – The Weeknd

Who Will Win: While Andra Day’s stunning vocals have been making waves recently, The Weeknd’s sexy early 2015 hit from the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack should take this one without issue.

Best Rap Performance

“Apparently” – J. Cole

“Back to Back” – Drake

“Trap Queen” – Fetty Wap

“Alright” – Kendrick Lamar

“Truffle Butter” – Nicki Minaj feat. Drake & Lil Wayne

“All Day” – Kanye West feat. Theophilus London, Allan Kingdom and Paul McCartney

Who Will Win: Don’t get me wrong, I love “Trap Queen” and “Truffle Butter,” but it almost seems silly to have them face off against the clear frontrunner, “Alright.” Lamar’s album has been hailed by both critics and fans so fingers crossed that the Recording Academy follows suit.

Best Country Duo/Group Performance

“Stay A Little Longer” – Brothers Osborne

“If I Needed You” – Joey + Rory

“The Driver” – Charles Kelley, Dierks Bentley and Eric Paslay

“Girl Crush” – Little Big Town

“Lonely Tonight” – Blake Shelton feat. Ashley Monroe

Who Will Win: “Girl Crush,” no contest. I’m pretty sure that song has been talked about and listened to all year long in the country music world – add this win to its list of accolades.

Best New Artist

Courtney Barnett

James Bay

Sam Hunt

Tori Kelly

Meghan Trainor

Who Will Win: James Bay seems like a frontrunner, but I’m pulling for my girl Tori Kelly.

Song of the Year*
*focuses on songwriters, but the artists are listed

“Alright” – Kendrick Lamar

“Blank Space” – Taylor Swift

“Girl Crush” – Little Big Town

“See You Again” Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth

“Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran

Who Will Win: As far as songwriting goes, I’m thinking it’s either Kendrick’s trophy to lose or Ed’s trophy to gain.

Record of the Year*
*song focused

“Really Love” – D’Angelo and the Vanguard

“Uptown Funk” – Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars

“Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran

“Blank Space” – Taylor Swift

“Can’t Feel My Face” – The Weeknd

Who Will Win: This is arguably one of the closest categories of the night. All but one of these songs has had huge radio airplay for an extended amount of time (and seemed on the brink of world domination). It truly is anyone’s trophy to take. That being said, I’d like to see either “Uptown Funk” or “Can’t Feel My Face” take home the trophy – I still find myself singing them both more frequently.

Album of the Year

“Sound & Color” – Alabama Shakes

“To Pimp A Butterfly” – Kendrick Lamar

“Traveller” – Chris Stapleton

“1989” – Taylor Swift

“Beauty Behind The Madness” – The Weeknd

Who Will Win: Who knows? The GRAMMYS have a tendency of picking the less than popular choices – this one is always up in the air. Guess we’ll have to tune into the ceremony on February 15th on CBS! In the meantime, send in and comment your thoughts on this year’s crop of nominees.

Be sure to tune back in next week for an all-new Tuesday Tuneage playlist!
