Tuesday Tuneage: Love’s Labor Day Lost

Let the last week of summer fade away with some of these fun, upbeat (and only slightly theme-related) tracks…

Tuesday Tuneage: Week of 9/7/15

  1. “Can’t Sleep Love” – Pentatonix

A capella superstars and Grammy Award-winners Pentatonix may have gained initial recognition with their top 40 covers and epic medleys, but this original track from their forthcoming debut studio album is just as smooth with slick harmonies and an R&B rhythm that will have you dancing for days. (Check out Pentatonix on tour with Kelly Clarkson through 9/20!)

  1. “SummerThing!” – Afrojack feat. Mike Taylor

Dutch DJ Afrojack, along with vocalist Mike Taylor, collaborate on this funky d-lite – what makes this more than your typical EDM smash is the lighter feel in the verses that segues into the chorus’ breakdown. The song is bubbly, fresh and full of that infectiousness that is needed for a late summer smash.

  1. “King” – Years and Years

This track has been one of my favorites all summer long – its an electric 80s dance party meets British alt-pop at its finest. The UK band’s LP “Communion” has more groove-worthy tunes and is definitely worth a listen.

  1. “You Just Want My Money” – Jason French

This colorful write-off of a no-good gold digger puts the ‘fun’ in funky – it’s Jason Mraz-esque in its colorful simplicity, but with an extra R&B flair. French’s croon is smooth and sweet, which makes it even easier to sing along.

  1. “Colors” – Halsey

This dark-but-bouncy track is easily one of my favorite tracks off of her debut LP “Badlands.” The alt-pop songstress’ first record debuted at #2 on the Top Album Sales chart this past week (only behind The Weeknd) and I can only predict that she will continue to rise.

  1. “Something Better” – Audien feat. Lady Antebellum

Lady A is known best as pop-country superstars, but this collaboration with Grammy-nominated house/trance artist Audien allows them to expand their musical horizon. The trio’s signature harmonies are only enhanced by the simple, catchy dance beat – it’s something different for fans, but it is not so changed that you won’t be singing along just as loud.

  1. “Not Letting Go” – Tinie Tempah feat. Jess Glynne

British rapper Tinie Tempah enlisted rising songstress Jess Glynne (who you’ve heard on Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be” and in her new single “Hold My Hand”) for this instantly infectious ditty. Glynne’s soulful swoop into the chorus is the perfect accent to Tempah’s verses. This is a great example of a rap-pop duet made right.

Video of the Week: “Summer Nights” – Justin Thorne and Kevin McHale

Set in a Snapchat story backdrop, this new end-of-summer ode from Glee star Kevin McHale and his former NLT bandmate Justin Thorne (who penned the song) is the perfect tune to wind down the sunny days and star-filled nights of the summer season.
