Tuesday Tuneage: Twice Is Nice

Because one Nick J mention obviously wasn’t enough…

This week’s Tuesday Tuneage features the latest Bieber single, some body rolls from Rita Ora and Chris Brown and one of The Weeknd’s tracks from his hot debut album. Read on and listen in! (And as always, subscribe to the Tuesday Tuneage playlist on Spotify as shown below.)

  1. “Real Life” – The Weeknd

Fresh off of his highly anticipated debut album “Beauty Behind The Madness,” the opening track sets the tone immediately. Dark, sexy beats mixed with a smooth, sensual vibrato are more of the same thing we’ve heard from him – but hey, it’s definitely not broken, so no need to fix it.

  1. “Firestone” – Kygo/Conrad Sewell

Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo teamed up with Australian singer Conrad Sewell for this understated dance track. It’s one of those tracks that are just as easy to sing along with as it is to get down to, which to this music listener is a total plus.

  1. “What Do You Mean” – Justin Bieber

It’s been years full of relationship drama, multiple run-ins with the law, and more – but the Biebs is back. Our Canadian bad boy (now with floppy hair!) returned to the VMAs stage last weekend to debut the single live on TV for the first time – and we all immediately started bopping. It’s catchy, it has a pan flute back track, what more could we want?!

  1. “Renegades” – X Ambassadors

This Ithaca, NY-based band has been featured on plenty of tracks with big-name acts (Eminem, Zedd) but this song has moved the alt-rock band into their own category. The track, off of their debut LP “VHS,” recently peaked at the top of the Billboard Alternative Songs chart – not a bad way to keep going.

  1. “Back Together” – Robin Thicke feat. Nicki Minaj

It’s catchy, it’s dance-able, it’s everything a pop song should sound like (at least to this listener). I mean, c’mon, it’s produced by legendary pop producer Max Martin (Britney Spears, NSYNC, Taylor Swift) and it’s got a disco vibe. The bright, bubbly track is definitely worth a listen.

  1. “21” Hunter Hayes

Country-pop cutie Hunter Hayes sings about the joys of youth in this fun, mid-tempo track. With a catchy chorus and an easy-going vibe, it’s got the perfect windows down, sunshine-filled Sunday drive feel.

  1. “Body On Me” Rita Ora feat. Chris Brown

Slow, sensual, soulful – all things coming from this pop/R&B hybrid. These two make a good musical pair as they trade dreamy fantasties about each other.

Video of the Week: “Levels” – Nick Jonas

Tons of new videos came out this week, including Bieber’s “What Do You Mean” and Taylor Swift’s latest, “Wildest Dreams” – but my pick is the visual accompaniment to one of last week’s tracks, “Levels” by Nick Jonas. His Justin Timberlake-circa-2002 solo debut vibe is prominent throughout the track, the video, and the persona. This listener is intrigued to see where this new post-Jo Bro era will go.
