Summer Playlist 2010

These are my picks for the tunes that should repeated on your radio all summer long!

  1. “Misery” – Maroon 5.
This is one of my favorite bands because they always seem to find a way to incorporate different styles into a similar sound. This tune is definitely the most in the “pop” genre that they have ever recorded, but it WORKS. It’s catchy, dance-worthy, and it still sounds like the good ole M5. You can hear little bits of classic M5 (“Makes Me Wonder” and “This Love”, predominantly) mixed into this new sound. Producer Mutt Lange is known for his work with Def Leppard and his ex-wife Shania Twain, and being a Lange fan, I was curious about how his typical “stadium anthem” sound would incorporate with the band’s more jazzy tempo. The strange thing is that I can’t really hear Mutt on this song…strange, but I’m still intrigued.
  2. “California Gurls” – Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg.
Katy Perry has a knack for making simple, catchy songs. Most of these songs became summer anthems (“I Kissed A Girl”, “Hot ‘N Cold”), and “Gurls” is no exception. While the beat is basically Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” riff, it is still one of those tunes that get stuck in your head, and that’s a good thing! All of her songs may have similar premises and beats, but they are successful for a reason: today’s listeners enjoy the repetitiveness of popular music. They crave it, and record companies/artists are eager to provide audiences with a new face for the same product. Overall, expect this song to blare at the beach on the hottest of summer days.
  3. “Find Your Love” – Drake.
I’m not a big Drake fan, as well as not the biggest advocator for auto-tune, but this song has a haunting sense for me. It has a nice ring and flow, and it is very smooth. Again, back to the aforementioned marketing: here’s another example of a new face with the same premise. It’s a poppier version of Kanye West (simply because of the auto-tune.) Very enjoyable and “jammable.”
  4. “Alejandro” – Lady Gaga.
For me, Gaga can do no wrong. The video is another example of her insanely creative artistry. She is a great performer and this is a great song. The Latin influence helps strengthen the dance beat, which seems to be Gaga’s fortay in the Billboard world.
  5. “Hurtful” – Erik Hassle.
New British artist that has a lovely pop/rock sound. He’s your typical singer/songwriter, but I can hear pain in his voice. It was love at first listen.
  6. “Eenie Meenie” – Sean Kingston/Justin Bieber.
As much as I dislike the latter, this is an insanely catchy song. I admit, I sing along whenever I hear it. It’s your typical Billboard knocker that catches audiences by the throats and forces them to sing along…all pleasantly, of course.
  7. “Desnudate” – Christina Aguilera.
While not a single off of her new album “Bionic”, this is another example of the Latin flavor leaking into the latest dance tracks. Provocative and pleasing, this song is another one that everyone will be dancing too this season.
  8. “Ghost” Fefe Dobson.
A great girl-rock pop song with a nice voice to lead it. It’s a typical teenage girl song, but, again, likeable.
